We seem to be
getting an increased number of enquiries regarding gas flow and leak detection.
In fact I have given a number of lectures and seminars on this subject at a few well known universities.
This topic is one of our specialities, however, gas flow is not as straight forward as
many think, a hole passing a gas through it produces some interesting effects
that changes the predicted flow rate by up to 50% of the calculated flow rate.
Besides the gas type there are the dimensions of the hole, the leading and
trailing shape of edge to the hole, pressure effects, any groove down the inside
of the hole, a burr etc.... In fact if you try calculating the flow rate for a
given hole diameter you will be lucky to get within 50% of the true value!!
Anyone who tells you its easy is probably lying or just possibly an old hand at
'guessing' roughly the value and adjusting the final dimensions to get the
required value! Add to that the
problems with different gases, pressures, temperature, turbulence etc... and its
all still a 'black art'. just another one of my many fascinations!
Any suggestions you have for making this page either more informative, amusing etc. would be appreciated, why not use our reply form !
All for now - John.
